This here is a technique that I’ve been developing and polishing over the years. It’s a method that I came up with while creating title templates. Once you set-up the project once, you can easily use something like True Comp Duplicator  to create as many scenes as you need.

You can use any text by simply changing the title inside the initial holder composition that you create. You can even use a logo and easily turn it into a 3D extruded version of it.

The set-up of this project is based around having separate layers for the front, middle and back. The middle extrusion is probably the hardest part to pull off. Using a couple of expressions on one layer, you can then create duplicates of that layer that are offset into Z space incrementally. This will create the 3D extrusion that is affected by an actual camera. You can pan and orbit around it.

The next part is to add a Ramp effect to the front part of the text. This ramp is then copied to the extrusion (middle) part, only with reversed color values (black becomes white and vice-versa). Additional copies of the layers with fractal noise applied to them will serve as a subtle reflection pass to sell the 3D feel better.

Finally I cover a bit on how you can set up a nice background, add some depth of field and some color correcting tips.

What you will learn

• Create 3D Extrusion

• Set up background

• Advanced Color Correction

• After Effects CS6 (and above)
